Is Getting a College Degree Worthless?

There has been recent debate on the value of a college education. Some believe that getting a degree is the only way to get a good job. While others believe that the learning institution is a system that puts students in lifelong debt.
Recent college graduates can not find jobs even after spending up to 6 years at a top level University.
Vocational students who enroll into certificate and associate degree programs and are trained on a skill to become a pharmacy technician or medical assistant say that employers will not hire them without years of work experience.
Unemployed college graduates have student loans to pay back although they do not have any monthly income coming in to cover the high interest payments.
Some are comparing the amount of debt from school loans to having a home mortgage. Not what many graduates expect after devoting so many years of their lives to studying and taking tests.
If a college degree is worthless why are high school students encouraged to attend the best universities?
Economic experts will state that the American education system is making money off of its tax payers by continuing to raise tuition costs each year.  This includes the high cost of textbooks which are greatly adding to the expense of attaining the "American Dream".
The average family must start putting money aside to save up enough cash to afford to send their children to college. Most of the time at the expense of the families future retirement plans.
The workforce is seeing a decline in job growth creating more pressure on recent graduates of Bachelors, Masters and PhD recipients.
If this is the case why are teenagers told that having a college degree will earn them one million dollars income over their lifespan?
The answer is simple, the education system is a business and the more people the government can influence to spend money on getting a degree the more currency college universities can make at the expense of the tax payers.
The government makes it easy to qualify for student loans with high interest rates helping to increase the amount of the loan due. Actually obtaining a bachelors degree is equivalent to having a high school diploma because of the decrease in value, meaning that everyone has one.
So it requires people to strive for higher degrees in Masters of  Business or even a Doctorate. The time invested in getting a piece of paper that says you are worthy of a higher salary has some flaws in it.
What you major in is going to be the determining factor on your future success and employability
Beware of following the crowd or having a herd mentality when it comes to going to the university of your choice. The students of today need to look at the economy, the stock market and the politics of education.
One of the things I always stress to my students is that you have to find out what industries are seeing growth and then plan your education around that data. If you don't you will be among the many who have no use of the degrees they received.
You can not blindly go to school and take what you think is going to be popular when you graduate. This type of behavior will lead you to the unemployment line and with a stack of debt to go with it.
The areas students need to be looking while in college
New technology is going to constantly change the way we see the world on a global scale, and the types of jobs that will be created will come as a result of those changes.
Don't get caught up in the hype but instead look at where the U.S. economy is headed. People will always need food, clothing, shelter, transportation and energy. These are the basic necessities of life and no matter how much advancement of technology takes over the world, these common needs must be filled.
Who will provide these resources? That is where you come in, while picking majors in college look for ways to prepare yourself for these types of occupations:
  • Solar Energy and Natural Gas
  • Agriculture and Farming
  • Manufacturing of goods
  • Medical Research
Companies will need to hire specialists, scientists and engineers in these growing sectors. It will require you to step up to the plate and learn some hard principles, it will take dedication to earn a high enough score on your SAT tests and get a 4.0 GPA average, as well as becoming adept in mathematics.
At the start of this article I was posing the question of whether college was a waste of time and money. In my opinion it is not if done correctly.
Is obtaining a degree worthless? not if you choose the right major.
Also how you obtain the degree will make a difference especially with the growing trend of higher education being taught in online learning programs.
Basically if you plan it out it can be the most rewarding experience you will encounter in your life. Learn to work the educational system to your advantage, instead of being a victim. Pick college majors that will help you come out on top of the bureaucracy.
You will not be taught this in school and your counselors will not help you plan for your future. You must take responsibility for your choices by becoming informed about what is going on around you from a local and global standpoint.
Look into going to trade schools and learn a skill, seek out apprenticeships and remember that certificate and associate degree programs produce good job opportunities as well.
